Rachel Barber is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in the natural world. working predominantly as a painter and printmaker, she works from her studio in cheshire in the North West of England.
In her current work she finds inspiration from and seeks to draw attention to the beauty of the natural world, She hopes her work helps to create awareness of the urgent need as a society to care for and protect the fragile natural world around us. Flowers, botanical forms, wild life, land and sea scapes are a constant influence.
Through walking in her local environment including the Peak District National Park and countryside Rachel drawers on the colours, light and atmosphere she feels as the seasons change and attempt to bring this in to her practice. She also gathers inspiration on her travels to other countries.
The process for her mono prints requires applying ink to a plate then rolling ,scraping and wiping and manipulating it. Paper is then put over the plate and passed through the printing press.
Rachel’s method of printmaking in her work aims to create layers and textures to reflect light, movement and form. With this process of mono printing each print is unique and there is an element that cannot be controlled, which can reveals an organic spontaneous feel to the image, that Rachel aims for in her process.
For her screen prints she then transfers the images from photographs she has taken, or drawings made onto a screen where the ink is passed through printing in layers over the mono print.
Her paintings are created in a similar way to her prints, building up layers of tone and light.
she works predominantly in acrylics and water mixable oils on canvas and wooden panels.
Drawing and sketching is an integral part of her process, to use in a final piece of work, or for inspiration.
